It apparently had worked like magic and a few pushes of the swing had sent the little mites into deep slumber giving the opportunity for some much deserved rest for the weary moms as well. They were also quick to remind to keep some extra batteries handy in the event of the batteries running low and the swing stopping in mid sway before baby had fallen asleep.

A mom who drives a lot swore by her favorite item of baby gear which according to her is the stroller frame that let’s the baby car seat snap into it for ease of movement. According to her, its greatest advantage does not have to wake baby when you have to get in and out of the car. She also advises parents never to buy baby car seats that have been used because you never know if these have been compromised in any way due to a previous accident. Furthermore, car seats apparently have a date of expiry which means that after a certain period of time, the fabric can break or start cracking which can be unsafe as well as unhealthy for baby.

All moms however did not feel they had to have state of the art innovative new gear and were quite insistent that there were other things they couldn’t do without. One mom decided she couldn’t do without the very versatile Ziploc bag with everything ready for an instant change of diaper and an extra one for dirty diapers. She thought they were also ideal to carry a few toys or pacifiers. Another one said she loved bibs with color coded snaps at the bottom that created deep pockets to catch food that fell when feeding baby .

All in all, moms love to try out new gadgets when they hear about them from friends or see them in adverts. What they should remember however is that keeping baby safe is even more important than convenience and it’s always best to check about the safety of child products before purchasing anything.

My little niece will be celebrating her first Christmas this year and I have already started looking around for something special to be given as her first Christmas gif. My dilemma is in deciding what to give. Should it be something the parents will appreciate or something useful for the baby although baby wouldn’t care whatever I gave her since she’s way too small to understand. Anyway I’m hoping to buy something special to remind her of her first Christmas and know how special it was for her aunt as well.

I thought at first of giving her clothes and stuff which I thought would come in useful at least for her parents. But then I realized she had got enough and more to keep her going for a long time. She also had the essentials such as a crib, a pram and even a push chair and mundane items such as baby lotions, shampoos, blankets, mitts and socks as useful as they are seem are so boring and also wouldn’t last until baby was grown up. Toys are sort of OK I thought, but those too would be long gone and in the trash bin even before she could understand their meanings. In desperation I thought of giving her a Teddy because all babies love them. The one I saw could even have baby’s name printed on its jumper. That’s it I thought, if I can’t find something better, I’ll settle for Teddy.

If you really take the trouble to look around, there are some unique and wonderful gifts that can be bought for baby, such as the Christmas Star which was no ordinary star and the Teddy design cutlery set with which baby could have lots of fun. I fell in love with the star which I knew would look sensational on top of the Christmas tree. Why it would be special was because of the fact that it could be engraved right across with baby’s name and the year so that she could use it as her very own Christmas tree star for years to come. The personalized cutlery set was also good to bring back memories of her first Christmas and I was sure her mum would keep it safe once she outgrew it to show it to her one day.

Some other very appropriate gifts I came across for baby’s first Christmas were CD’s of songs with baby’s name sung where ever suitable and stories read out using baby’s name. These were all gifts that could be custom ordered and personalized according to your wish as was the cute calendar I saw that had a photo of a baby for every month where you get your baby’s name printed across the photo.

What lovely gifts children get today I thought, my memories going back to the time I was a kid myself and had to be content with much less in the way of gifts, but in no way lacking in love and laughter our house was always filled with. Isn’t that what all children need even more than toys and gifts? The love of parents can compensate for many things and any little baby who is loved whole heartedly will have the best gift of all and that is what will live in her memory more than any gift that is bought from the store.

The gewurztraminer grape is one variety well suited to growth in cooler climates. It is a white wine grape with a pinkish red color. It does contain natural sugar, which means that these wines are dry white wines.

The Gewurztraminer is very different from other wine grapes such as Marsanne in that it does not grow well in chalky soils. The vines are also very susceptible to disease. Since the grape does bud early, it can be destroyed by frost.

The growing season is long because it takes the grape a long time to ripen and the climate during the summer does need to be dry and warm, but not hot. In hot climates, the grape will retain too much of its natural sugar to balance out the acidity.

The first part of the name of the wine and the grape, Gewurz, is from the German language and means “spicy”. The second part of the name, Traminer, is the name of a small town in Austria from which the grape came.

The wine is thick and rich and goes well with seasoned dishes, just like a Pinotage, especially Asian, Mexican and Indian cuisine. It should be served at about 50F (10C) and can be served alone without being used in combination with a meal. It ages well and can be kept for up to ten years.

There are many varieties of Gewurztraminer wines, which often makes your choice very difficult. The following wines of this nature are ones that expert wine tasters recommend:

         Airlie Gewurztraminer 2002. This wine is very inexpensive and has flavours of pears and apples blended with cloves and spices. It has a crisp finish and will go well with Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.

         Andrew Rich Gewurztraminer Ice Wine 2004. If you are looking for a wine with a silky finish and a taste of honey, orange and apricot, this is the wine for you.

         Canoe Ridge Gewurztraminer 2002. This is a spicy white wine that has the flavours of nutmeg, grapefruit and almonds. It goes well with all types of food.

This can be a delicious wine to serve with desserts. Although it is generally a dry wine, you can also have light and bubbly flavours. The dry versions of the wine have a high level of alcohol content, which makes them very potent.

In the production of the wine, a light touch is necessary because the riper the grapes are when they are picked, the more bitter they taste. Many of the wine producers do add sugar to the wine to help mask this strong taste.
